ACL ~ Individual

In July & August I touched on Action Centred Leadership as one of the keys of effective leadership, understanding the relationship between each of the three interlocking circle of Task, Team & Individual will be key to your success as a leader.

Lk 15:8-10 from these verses we get a clear message that each individual is precious to God. Therefore if individuals are precious to God they ought to be for every leader, neglect the person and you jeopardise your ministry/church for you open the door of judgement.

Developing individuals

We must never forget that the members of your team (s) are human beings. They have their own needs – to live and express themselves as individuals, to earn enough to provide for themselves and their families, to find satisfaction both at work, in church and at play and to gain acceptance by their colleagues, if individuals are to be adequately motivated they:

  • Must be able to get satisfaction from personal achievement in what they are doing – this may differ from individual to individual
  • Must feel they are making a worthwhile contribution to the objectives of the team and the organisation/church
  • Must feel that the job itself is challenging, is demanding the best of them and is giving them a degree of responsibility that matches their abilities
  • Must receive adequate recognition for their achievements
  • Must have genuine control over those aspects of the job that have been delegated to them (that is once you have delegated something, don’t interfere unless you really have to)
  • Must feel that they, as human beings, are developing and advancing in experience and ability.
Making sure that these needs are met for every individual in the team is possibly the most difficult, and certainly the most rewarding for any christian leader, be it the leader of a church or a team within.
